Alexandria Bay, NY
About
Alexandria Bay is the largest village in the American Thousand Islands, east of the northeastern end of Wellesley Island, in Jefferson County, New York. It lies within the town of Alexandria, on the south bank of the St. Lawrence River, and its motto is "Heart of the Thousand Islands."
Settlement began around 1817, and by 1836 the community had about 25 dwellings. In its resort years its main access was by steamer from Clayton. Boldt Castle, a 120-room mansion on Heart Island near the village, was left unfinished when Louise Boldt died in January 1904; the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property in 1977. The village had 924 residents at the 2020 census.
