American Narrows
About
American Narrows is a very narrow but deep channel of the St. Lawrence River in Jefferson County, New York, near Alexandria Bay. Strong currents and jagged rocks have caused the loss of more than one vessel there.
On June 23, 1976, the tug Eileen C ran the oil barge NEPCO 140 aground in the American Narrows, off Wellesley Island, and about 300,000 US gallons (1,100 cubic metres) of oil entered the river.
