Grindstone Island
About
Grindstone Island is the second largest US Thousand Island, north and northwest of Clayton, NY, in the Town of Clayton, Jefferson County, New York. It covers about 2,330.7 hectares (5,759.2 acres), with 44.8 km (27.9 mi) of shoreline.
The island is about 5 miles (8.0 km) long and 3 miles (4.8 km) wide at its widest point, and lies between Wellesley Island and Wolfe Island. The first known settlement was in 1804. The island was once considered Canadian but has been recognized as American since 1823. In 1831 Eliza Evertson bought the entire island. The Grindstone Island Upper Schoolhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.
